A live edge table is a solid wood slab whose edge keeps the natural shape of the tree. Since every slab is different, the same questions often come up before choosing. Here are our answers.
What does "live edge slab" mean?
A slab is a thick tabletop cut from the trunk, and "live edge" means its side follows the natural outline of the tree instead of being cut straight. Our slabs are mostly suar wood, imported directly from Thailand. They become dining tables, kitchen islands or large desks.
Three ways to get your table
The one-piece slab
It is cut from a single piece of the trunk, with no joints. This is the version with the most character: bold grain, dark heartwood, a lighter edge and a generous thickness.

The joined slab
It is made of a few solid suar boards glued side by side, with live edges. It's still solid wood, with no particleboard or veneer. Its shape is more regular and it's easier on the budget. It's sold as a slab only or as a complete table with legs.
The straight cut
Love solid wood but prefer clean edges? A straight cut gives a more modern look. Talk to our team: depending on the slabs available, it can be done.

How it works
- Choose your format: the type of slab, slab only or complete table, and the length that suits your room (our dining table size guide can help).
- Place your order online or at our Laval store.
- Pick your slab: we send you photos of the available slabs, and you choose yours along with your legs.
- We prepare your table: sanding, finishing and mounting on the legs. Allow generally 3 to 7 business days, sometimes a little longer depending on the finish.
- Pick it up or have it delivered. Delivery time is added to preparation time.
The legs
Our tables are mounted on black metal legs. The two most popular styles:
- U-shaped legs: a clean, simple line that leaves room for your knees and for a chair at the end of the table.
- X-shaped legs: a more graphic design that looks great under a thick slab.
Taking the slab only? It can also sit on your own legs or on a kitchen island.
A slab for the kitchen
Suar also makes beautiful kitchen island countertops. The countertop comes as a slab only; a custom cut or finish can be discussed with our team.

Cracks, knots and colour variations
A solid wood slab responds to the humidity in your home. Fine cracks may appear at the ends or around knots, especially in winter when the heating dries out the air. This is the mark of real wood, not a defect, and it doesn't weaken the slab. Keep the room's humidity between 35 and 50% and keep the table away from baseboard heaters and the fireplace. All our tips are on the furniture care page.
Before you order: measure your access
A 2 m (79 in) solid wood slab is heavy and doesn't bend. Measure doors, hallways, stairs and corners before choosing the length. Not sure? Send us your measurements and we'll check with you.

Frequently asked questions
Do I see my slab before it's prepared?
Yes. After you order, we send you photos of the available slabs and you choose yours.
Is a joined slab real wood?
Yes, it's solid suar. The boards are simply glued together to form a wide, regular slab.
Can I use it as a desk?
Yes. The slab works very well on desk legs, about 75 cm (29.5 in) high.
